There are other issues there besides commandeering holidays. I think my friends biggest issue is she just wants to be free from MIL for her mother's day and birthday . But she cannot say no, and nor can her husband, so they both get bullied into it every year.

We used to somewhat compromise. MIL got brunch and then the rest of the day was all mine. We'd switch some years so I'd have most of the day and then go see MIL for dinner.

I do not have a mother in law (well I do but she is a Step mother in law, married after DH was grown, and it is not at all the same thing). I never got to meet her, so I have no idea what my opinion would have been. We usually go to the Zoo for my Mothers day and try to meet up with my mom on the holiday. It works well. For Fathers Day we let DH and Dad go fishing, which is exactly what they want to do.
