Hey, so I have a whole bunch of hens, (this is the 3rd one) who have all had prolapsed ovaries. I'm wondering if it is contagious? Something they're eating? 2 of them have been Araucanas (including the current one) and another is one of my older chickens.

Is it a breed? I'm really peeved, because everything is going wrong with my flock at the moment. My goose about killed herself being broody. I lost all 3 of my baby ducks the day they were due to hatch. I have yet another prolapsed ovary.
Sorry, but I really did have to get it all out.

Do any of you have suggestions? I have only had one survive, and that's because I kept her separate for 1 month. Should I just cull them when this happens?

Please help,
Camille

A prolapse can be treated with sugar or prep H as both will help shrink swollen tissue. Do your birds receive enough calcium, asking b/c in other animals a prolapse can be related to low calcium levels, since hens use large amounts of calcium in egg production this is a possibility. Are your birds prone to egg binding as this too can be a result of vitamin deficiencies, especially vit D/E and calcium.
