My chicks love grass-when it is growing we use a chicken trailer and don't have to mow large sections of the yard. In the winter I have a couple old storm windows that I grow some winter rye under and take it to the girls.

There were reports of small animals like guinea pigs and rabbits getting sick from grass cut by lawnmowers. Especially gas powered push mowers. It does leave some contaminants.
