Fresh mulch for the chickens

I wanted to make sure we can put fresh made mulch in the chicken run We are mulching up some pines and poplars trees and wanted to be sure this will not hurt the chickens

We've done it with pines and cottonwoods and maples etc, never noticed that it made anybody sick. Pines can be messy with the sap though depending on what kind and the weather Only other thing I can think of is if they are bored enough locked up since it is winter to eat stuff they normally wouldn't bother with like chopped up pine needles maybe? Maybe put some in and see what they do?

Oh they free range all day but I've heard fresh mulch has bugs in it and I wanted to make sure it wasn't something that could hurt the chickens

We've put various wood chips/hog fuel down in the horse pen when the birds were free ranging---no issues.
