Friend might be rationing her flock too severely??

I have a friend like this too but i cant stress about her birds when i should be stressing over mine, mine are my pets but not spoiled they get treats once a week on mondays and get fed generously like it has been said if they are laying well then they are doing ok...its all about how you feel about your birds, they (meaning my friend and yours) dont share yours and my feelings about our chickens!

I think of my chickens as livestock - pretty ones that are very small and very easy to look after (compared to cattle). I also think that table scraps are not treats, they are just extra "food". Some people around here think I spoil my chickens by using a heat lamp to keep them comfortable in winter, but I do not consider them pets, and they are not a novelty to me.
THEY ARE LIVESTOCK AND THEY HAVE A PURPOSE FOR LIVING HERE.
My dog and cat also have a purpose for being here - they are a neccessity on a farm. That doesn't mean that I don't let my dog sleep in the house when it's 40 below 0...or keep baby chicks in the house...
A well looked after animal is a healthy animal and pays off to it's owner in the long run. It sounds like your friend is used to having chickens around and just thinks of them as livestock Spoiling them is a matter of opinion and if you want to do it then go ahead, and enjoy the fact that your pets feed you....lol

I get tired of this snotty snobbish attitude. It rears it's head once in a while here (and at the feed store) and never fails to irritate me.

Kick her in the ankle for me, would you?

People often forget that their personal experience base does not reflect the totality of human existence.

Over most of the world chickens are considered livestock, not pets like a good portion of people on BYC. I fall into the catagory of considering them livestock......I don't think that's means I've got a snobbish attitude about it. Doesn't mean I don't take good care of them either.

If you're friend is getting that many eggs per day she's doing something right.

Poor things! I can't imagine starving my flock like that! Mine get all they want, plus treats!

Some people....

My only comment regardless of differences of opinion on the care is the reference to FRIEND.
If I got that kind of snotty remark from a friend of mine, I'd be re-evaluating the label of friend.
