Friendly breeds?

I was wondering if I could get more chickens so it’s not so lonely with the four hens I have. Can’t decide on which breeds to get. Does anybody recommend any friendly breeds that are good egg layers? We already have 4 buff orpigtons. Any suggestions would help.

silkies are the best! the rooster wouldn't hurt a fly and no need to worry about dogs or children getting attacked. Orpingtons are great too but sometimes the roosters need extra attention

The only problem with getting day old chicks mailed to me is that I am concern of the cold weather going around the US.

Can you wait a few months? I would be hesitant, too, due to the cold weather elsewhere, as well as reports of USPS live animal stoppages reported on BYC. Or maybe check out your local TSC, feed store, or hatchery to see what's available? If you go that route, you could always create a list of breeds folks have suggested here and try to match them up with what's available locally. Choosing breeds to get can be overwhelming, so this might make it easier with fewer options.

Easter Eggers! They are so friendly and sweet. They are also superb egg layers- my neighbors have some that are laying an egg a day each right now!!! I just got six of them b/c I fell in love with theirs and how sweet they were! You def need some EE's.

I've been thinking of getting more then 3 or 4 but i'm not sure if the coop is big enough

Is there any way to enlarge the coop? Silkies are fairly small, although that many chickens need space. You should definitely wait a bit before ordering them... the journey is already dangerous for the chicks on a normal day... the cold is deadly for humans imagine frail little chicks.. isn't there a nearby breeder where you could go pick them up? You could check craigslist!

they also do not carry chicks, only animal supplies.

Ooooo! Silkies! They are just so friendly and very motherly, so they can be very affectionate!

My silkies are loners. They don’t hang with each other or anyone else. Just independent..anyone else experience that? I have 2 now but did have 3. She is not picked on. But they have never had friends. The others all have friends!
