Friendly Chicken

Hey! I have a Black Australorp chicken, and she is a little too friendly. I heard this breed isn't really social with people as much as Easter Eggers or Buff Orpingtons. Obviously I love the extra love she is giving me, I just don't understand why. I usally crouch down to pet my chickens and she comes over and walks into my arms almost like a hug. I was just wondering if anyone else has this "friendly case" with there chickens. Thanks for reading.

How old is this chicken? Does it lay eggs? Please post a picture of it, clearly showing it from the side and also its head. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that it's a cockerel.

Some birds are just really friendly individually, Her friendliness is due to a combination of her being a friendly individual and you taking really good care of her and earning her trust

I have 3 Black Australorps. The first one (Roady) I got is super friendly, as I walk up to her she immediately lays down. So I got 2 more, they are just as friendly and docile also. Roady went broody and hatched 5 this year with 2 of them her daughters. My best mom hands down of the 10 broodys I had this year.

I've had two BAs. Both have been fairly flighty. The current one is semi-disabled (doesn't walk well), so I've been giving her extra care and she's become much friendlier and willing to be handled over time.

That said, although there are breed tendencies, chickens are individuals and you will find variations from the norm.

My girl is definitely a hen. She lays eggs and went broody once. She is about 11 months, here is a picture of my girl, Onyx

You have obviously learned that what you hear is not always true. I find that especially when people start talking about this breed is friendly or this one is not when they are talking about individual birds. Breeds may have general tendencies but individuals within that breed can vary tremendously. You can get absolute terrors from the friendly breeds or BFF from a horrible breed. That's just the way it works with living animals.

I'm glad you are happy with her. You are doing some things right!
