I'd like to add some frizzle gene into my flock. We are on the verge of being able to have one of our hens raise the next batch of chicks (just waiting for someone to go broody). I would like to get the frizzled gene in there somehow, but I'm confused about it.

What kind of frizzled rooster should be added to our flock?

We're focusing on raising the EE's because people just love the blue/green eggs.

Also, where can I find a frizzle?

It seems like none of the hatcheries seem to advertise frizzled chickens.

I have been checking around locally, but it would be nice to have a particular breed to target.

Any help would be great!

You only need one frizzle, can be a hen(if you already have an EE rooster) or a rooster. A lot of "Frizzles" for sale are actually frizzled cochins or cochin mixes. Not sure if you want the feather leg, small size etc in your flock.. there are frizzled mutts and frizzles in other breeds closer in size to your EE but they can be relatively hard to find anyways. Stizzles are frizzled cochin and silkie mixes.

Your other option is to buy eggs from frizzles or even some kind of cross to get a bigger cleaner leg frizzles to breed with your EE later.

Doing search for frizzle or frizzled is the easiest, even a frizzled rock still would be called frizzle or frizzled rock.. Try putting up an wanted ad for a frizzled bird close to type you want or ask for eggs. Who knows, maybe someone already has frizzled EE.. but again, if you want clean legs, no crest you need to ask or chances are pretty high you will get a frizzled bird with leg feathering, crest...

I don't really care about the legs, I kinda like the feathered legs. I think I want a rooster so that I can frizzle my naked necks as well as the decent sized flock of ee's we have. We do have a ee rooster.

We currently only have that roost as he was supposed to be a girl, but we are keeping him around currently just to do his roo thing up on the girls.

I wonder if a banty frizzle would be manly enough to do the deed on the bigger ee girls. I guess, if it's a roo, it's going to do his roo thing, even if the girls are big ones.

thnx for the replies

Frizzles can come in many different breeds...but the most common is Bantam Cochins. You may be able to find someone on here that has a frizzled Easter Egger Roo that would be ideal but rare. If you do buy a Bantam Frizzle Cochin Roo from a hatchery(Ideal-Poultry.com) has them and you can just order a few. Also mypetchicken..they will even be sexed...but you will pay WAY more! BUT...the chance that your banty frizzle roo will be able to successfully mate with your standard size EE hens is SLIM! I have frizzle roos and standard girls and though they diligently try to mate with the "Big Girls" it's just NOT even close to happening! It's more like they take a Piggy Back ride around the backyard!!! Funny to watch though! Alot of people on here told me that they have had batams and standards mate but I thik it would have to be standard Roo's and bantam hens for it to be a regular successful pair. I would suggest getting some bantam EE girls and a frizzle roo and then give it a go. Also the roos can be VERY AGGRESSIVE towards each other...so you don't want more than one frizzle roo or you will have to keep them seperated which can be a pain! The frizzle girls are doll babies...you could always get some frizzle girls and just use a bantam EE roo with them. I also have a standard roo thinking that I was going to have him mate with my frizzle girls and he TOWERS over them...they are as big as his leg! My standard roo never even made an attempt to mate with the bantam girls. I guess why put out all of the extra effort when he has girls his own size running around!

Sooo...I would stick with breeding the same sizes...your going to have MUCH more success and MUCH higher fertility! Blessings, Keri

Hey, that jarred my memory.. talk to Dipsy Doodle Doo- she has frizzled naked necks and also colored egg layers.. her birds are VERY cute.

Many bantams can and do learn how to breed with bigger girls, however the other question is will your hens let him.. some hens will beat down or just laugh at a little guy.. lol

Hi! I sent you an email, but then read this:
I think I want a rooster so that I can frizzle my naked necks as well

If you want to try incubating, my blue/splash Frizzle Naked Neck green-egger pen would give you just what you are looking for!

Here are 2 splash children from that pen:

They don't hatch all Naked Neck or all Frizzled, but about 1/4 inherit Naked Necks and Frizzling --- all are green-eggers.
