I got a chick from an assorted bantam bin, and it was clear quickly that it had curly feathers. As it fills out it's gotten this amazingly soft downy portion to the base of it's feathers. Is that normal for a frizzle, or do I have a sizzle?

This is the sweetest little thing. I'm hoping it's a hen, but we are keeping it regardless as we can keep one rooster. We've been calling it Fluffer Nutter.

Looks like a boy and a frizzle Cochin would be my guess. I have a barred frizzle that looked similar to him at one point. I also have a sizzle now that looks super fluffy. The sizzle I have looks nothing like what my frizzle looked like. His feathers don’t have the same structure and just kinda poof everywhere. But in a curly way.

That is a frizzle, and a cockerel.

Great explanation and photos!😊
A sizzle is bird, usually a silkie, that has silkied feathers that are frizzled.
A frizzle is a bird, usually a cochin or polish, but can be any breed, that has "regular" feathers that are frizzled.
Agree with above that OPs bird is a frizzle, mostly likely cochin, cockerel.

I think that that is a frizzle. Silkies are usually called sizzles. That is not a silkie its skin is red and its feathers are white. Silkies have white feathers with black skin. Sizzles should have 5 toes instead of four.

The thing is it does have five toes, which is that made me think it might have some silkie in it. I do have some true silkies and they have the black skin of course, but I've read sometimes silkie crosses can have pink skin if the silkie gene is diluted enough.

Two days ago he crowed. The adolescent crow is hilarious. I'd never heard it before. My daughter thought one of the chicks was being tortured by another. It did sound like a cat being strangled.
We'll keep him as long as he doesn't get aggressive. We have enough space to legally keep one. Unfortunately I'm pretty certain I have two other roosters.
