Frizzle Question

Is there any way to lean your odds in favor of a frizzled girl when picking out a chick?

I would prefer a girl chicken and I'd prefer a frizzled up wild feathered mess of a girl....

but the feedstore tells me there is no way to sex them and there is no way to know if they're feathers will be smooth or frizzled...

Hoping someone on here has some magic wisdom or myths that have worked in the past for them???

I am buying 8 frizzels knowing some will be normal feathered but, carriers of the frizzel gene. With Bantams all you can do is buy several and pray you get at least one of what you really want. Also it is not reccomended to breed a frizzel to a frizzel. You breed a normal(that carries the gene) to an actual frizzel. One other thing if you are buying from a mixed bantam(feather foot)order maybe 1 in 25 chance you will get just what you want. Maybe order your own group of just frizzeled cochins. One other Idear buy an older bird from a breeder.

So are you saying having feathered feet is a better chance of getting a frizzled girl?

Bantam? they are smaller right? according to online research the frizzles are cochin and about 8 pounds??? where am I going wrong?

Frizzle is an incompletely dominant gene. Non-frizzled birds do not carry it.

Feather footed breeds come in both male and female, there is no difference in the quality of foot feathering that is gender related.

Bantams cannot be vent sexed--they are too small; it would damage/injure them. Large fowl can be vent sexed, and if from a hatchery usually are.

Cochins are avialable in both large fowl and bantam sizes. Frizzle is available in either. Frizzle can be found in any breed, not just cochins.

Specifically, what are your wants/needs, other than to befriend the chicks you already have? What breeds are they?

OOOh! Good luck! One other idear if you can possibably wait till there wing feathers come in.. Maybe they won't sell fast but, that won't help with the gender thing. When I got my first flock of bantams I stuck with the cochin and silkies. I was also concerned about flying. The cochins really did not fly much even the normals and silkies just can't fly. Cochins are in a group of different breeds that all have feathered feet. Its not a reference to gender just a group. Like with dogs you have working, herding,sporting groups. In poultry there is standard(large) and bantam(small). then its broke down to different groups,this is mainly for showing. Now that you have gotten a quick lesson. I still think an older bird. That way you will get just what you want. remember she will cost more.

To answer the first question:...No there is no way to know which ones will be frizzled...youll just have to pick one out and hope its a girl and frizzled....GOOD LUCK!!

WOW...what fabulous lessons here...THANK YOU!!!

My main wants are:

girl (because my hubby said absolutely NO roosters!)

frizzled (because it's darling! and they can't fly well, so they won't get out of our 4 foot fenced area.

young (because then I could pop it in the brooder with the others)

WHY? (because everyone on her has convinced me that I should not stop at two...because what if...what if one dies?...then I'd have a lonely girl)

I really would be very content with just two...HOWEVER, if one died, I'd feel really sad and lonely for the remaining chick...(the two I have are 6 days old) I can't have 4, that's just too many for me and my family right now, but I could handle 3...however, like I mentioned it's not my 'desired amount' it would be more of an insurance plan and if all three were healthy and lived, it would be OK, but two would be better for now...

The farm supply is going to call me when they get their silkies and frizzles in (they were supposed to arrive today, but they didn't arrive yet...could that be a bad sign?)

running fast is GOOD...flying is bad....we can't net the fenced area they are going to be free ranging in...it's about 1000 square foot playground we have set up for our kids, but now it's going to be a part time free range area as well...the kids rarely play in there...and if they do, I have to hose it off first anyhow for spider webs...unless the chickens take care of that, then I'll be hosing for chicken poop! LOL

MY hubby is going to build a coop and run, so they have a nice place to be when they can't roam about (like when the kids have friends over in the playground, or when we are on vacation and the caregiver doesn't want to hang outside with them...etc)

sooo while in the fenced area, if they fly over the fence, they will be pretty much dead on contact, we have two dogs that would love a chicken dinner and several wild animals that would as well...we have coyotes that have come literally up to our gate and tried to call our dogs out...and there are bobcats, racoons, mountain lions, coyotes, possum (not sure if they would do anything?) you name it we got it LOL...so these girls need to be PROTECTED in a nice safe area...
