I was at a breeders house last weekend picking up some snowflake Bobs and he had bobwhite quail with frizzled feathers. Anyone else ever seen or heard of this mutation. Totally looked like a frizzled chicken only it was a bobwhite quail.I can't remember if he called them frizzled or ruffled.I should have taken pictures but when I get around a breeders farm I so busy asking questions and looking at what they have I forget. This particular guy also had elegant or Benson quail that was the first time I've seen them that overshadowed the frizzled quail.

I have never heard of frizzled quail, although when they molt, sometimes they do get frizzly. Quail that are lacking in protein will grow in frizzled feathers as well.

If by chance this breeder had a couple of odd frizzled quail over the years and bred them together, starting a breeding program with them, it is possible he has developed his own type of Bobwhite. But I am not aware of any Bobs naturally mutated or bred for being frizzled.

I was checking on my chicks today and one of the quail I bought from him has sprouted ruffled or frizzled feathers. The other one has normal smooth feathers.

they are both housed in same brooder both fed on 30 % protein gamebird feed.

Crappy cellphone pictures can't see any detail the feathers are way more frizzled than they appear. I don't want to stress the little guy out anymore at least for a couple of days. I've only had them about a week.

Keep an eye on them as they grow. Could just be molting, or funky feathers grew in during the last molt. Some wormers used during a molt will cause feathers to grow in rough. But if the birds molt out this fall and the frizzles return, then I am sticking with my original theory that he may have bred some odd birds and produced a frizzle look. :)

Hey snot, If your still on here, I know this is an old post.
But whatever happened with this quail?
The snowflake I have is 2 1/2 weeks old and it's feathers are starting to come in like this.

It is probably a defect in feathering like chickens some get an odd defect to have frizzled feathers, but to me this is rare never heard of a frizzled quail
