Moved just North of Kearney, MO 4 years ago. Literally just North, the south side of our road is in the city limits, and my wife wanted chickens so after doing Online looking I built a coop and run and a Brooder for what turned out to be 8 Chickens and one Rooster of the Russian Orloff variety.
Our Hens started laying eggs towards the end of summer last year and did pretty well at delivering 2 eggs total per day through January though February has been close to one a day. The last couple days have been better with more sunlight. I am waiting for June and July, the long days when we will be working in the garden, with the chickens running around with us looking for bugs, scratching in the rows and sitting by the coop at dusk waiting for them to walk in, get a quick drink and file up in to roost for the night. Those are nice ends to warm late spring, early summer days.
In the next week or so we will be gathering eggs for our first go at hatching. This means another coop for the youngins to be introduced to the older ones, will have a smalller unit I believe, maybe with Chicken tractor roots. It should be a fun summer for us and our grandkids.
