I’m a new member from Southern California near Wrightwood mountains. I had 27 thriving, beautiful chickens. We had Blue Laced Red Wyandots, Cream Legbar, Buff and Lavender Orpington, Ancona, Brown Leghorn(sold as chicks to us by Tractor Supply as Speckled Sussex)Blue Copper Marans, and Cuckoo Maran. They were producing about 2 dozen eggs a day. They were amazing.
One Cream Legbar must have imprinted on me because she would come to me to pick her up, ride around in my arms while I did chores Beth was the name I gave her.
Well yesterday was the worst day ever. My neighbors dogs broke through the hardware mesh somehow and killed 21 of our 27 chickens. Although we were devastated we had to act quick. The dogs were trapped inside the chicken runs. They had gained entry through the roof, had fallen in and then couldn’t get out.
It was utter detestation. However we have 6 dozen of their eggs. We have one small incubator with a dozen eggs but I ordered one that can take 41 eggs. From those eggs they left behind, even though they’d be crossbreeds I’m getting a new flock and making the roofs thick tin. And I’m thinking I can’t wait to bring em back.
Im still in shock, not yet grieving fully but one thing’s for sure. Beth got buried at the foot of our flowering plum tree. She’ll blossom every spring and in between they’ll be beautiful purple leaves on that tree to remind me how beautiful and trusting she was.
