This winter has been pretty harsh for me and my birds, but my main concern is my solitary rooster. He is in a cage by himself since my females don't like to be away form their duck brothers and sisters, but my rooster doesn't like the ducks. All my other birds were fine this winter since they had each other to keep warm, unfortunately my rooster did not. Through the winter my rooster would decide to sit on top of or in front of his coop, in almost negative conditions, any attempt to lock him up resulted in retaliation and pain focused at me (my rooster's not a nice guy ]: ) Because of this his comb got frost bit, bad! they whole thing, the tips of his wattles was even bit a little. I thought he would get better since last year the tips got bit and they got better when it warmed up. But my theory was wrong since yesterday I went to check on him and his comb was GONE! No where in sight! It FELL OFF! I feel so bad for him (but I can't help but giggle since he looks so goofy now XD) I'm worried he'll look like a goof forever! Can anyone tell me if my boys comb will grow back? His tips last year fell off and seemed to grow back, will his whole comb do the same?

i looked this up in my health book. once its frostbitten it no longer received blood supply it states it could fall off in your case it did or need surgery to remove it. it does not say it will grow back . sometimes nature is surprising and it might but the health book says no. it says the reason cocks are more suspectable to frostbite is because they don't sleep with the head tucked under the wing as a cold hen will. i hope somehow this is helpful. watch him during the summer months as they use the comb usually to regulate body temperature. best of luck to you. he just might grow it back; who knows I've seen stranger things happen! but according to the health book no. so I'd wait and see if he sprouts another comb. good luck to you! I'm glad he didn't need surgery and it fell off on its own without any infection or gang green! that's the positive side of it.
