Hi! It has been cold ( single digits) here so we thing it is frostbite that our rooster has. It has started to spread even though we put Vaseline on it. I just put on some Vetericyn because it says that helps. What should I do? Here is a picture:

It is the start of frostbite, in cold climates, not much can be done besides heating the coop to ensure frostbite doesn't develop. Ensuring there is adequate ventilation, and reducing the amount of water in the coop can help lessen the development, but oftentimes won't completely keep the problem from occurring.

Vaseline, and especially Vetericyn can freeze in cold temperatures, so I would stop applying that to his comb. It is generally best to leave the area alone.

I don’t put anything on combs, and if some frostbite occurs, it heals on it’s own without treatment. Occasionally I have seen some severe frostbite here on BYC where combs and wattles swell and weep, but most times the frostbite is not that severe. Do not massage or handle frostbitten tissue because it is very painful.
