Hello! I was wondering if my chickens had frostbite. I noticed that my Rhode Island Reds had black specks on their combs, and I’m not sure if it’s frostbite or not as this is my first year raising chickens. The temperatures drop into the 20’s at night and 40’s and 50’s during the day. I’ll try to get a picture.

Frostbite generally occurs on the tips of the comb/wattles. The tips will turn white the black.
The spots on your chickens' combs are scabs likely obtained from daily scratches, pecks, scrapes, etc. and are completely healthy.
Keep an eye on it just to make sure though, I am not a Frostbite expert. :thumbsup

Thanks so much!

Maybe a start of fowl pox? Seems a bit small though,
don’t worry. Fowl pox (dry) is pretty harmless, its kinda like chicken pox.
Either way, they seem perfectly fine judging on how tiny it is.
