our rooster is 9 months old. We had our coldest night so far of -10 C and since I have noticed his comb and wattle discolored. Is this frostbite ?
Today we are in the +s and it looks like this.
This is our first winter with our chickens.
Any advice on what this is, how to help, how to prevent frostbite appreciated !
We are in NB Canada and winter hasn’t even officially started.
Thank you !

It could be frostbite..... but it could also be just that he was a little excited. I've noticed my young (about same age) roosters' combs and wattles turning purple at the edges at various times. Someone here told me hormones can do that.

Best thing you can do to prevent frostbite is to keep the coop DRY and ventilated, but free of drafts. Low humidity is key. It seems counter-intuitive, but keeping vents open in the coop so that warm, moist air can escape upwards actually helps keep the birds warmer in winter.

I've also read that Bag Balm is great to apply to their combs and wattles to prevent or treat frostbite.
