Frostbite!!!!!

My buff orp got frostbite last month, she had damaged/abraded her comb by rubbing her beak back and forth across the hardware clothe while she was in "jail/hospital" and it froze. A few days ago I had her inside to check her out and while looking at her frostbit comb, the blackened portion fell off and the comb underneath was healed up and pink. I'll be putting bag balm on it now as I imagine it is sensitive to the cold. Poor girl. I never have frost on my windows. but when it is 100 percent humidity outside, it is hard to keep the inside below 95. :/ It is a battle against the wetness for sure right now.

I've only tried Vaseline --> does not stay on, does not work.

Bag Balm ----> Stays on and "helps"

I've only tried shortening on chickens I am frying up for supper.

So therefore I cannot tell you anything about it's efficacy on preventing frostbite.

My Rooster has white on the back of is comb, I put petroleum jelly on it. Will that help? Will that part of his comb fall off now? What can I do to help him now? Will bringing him inside for a few day help?

Bag balm helps better than petroleum jelly. The white may be through and through damage or superficial. It is hard to tell without pictures. Yes bringing in would help as his comb would come up in temperature and not freeze any further. But the problem is that there is alot of winter left and getting him acclimated back to cold may be more detrimental unless you are prepared to keep him in the house for the remainder of the winter.

Personally I'd put bag balm on the comb and keep him outside...where he is happiest probably.
