Awful. I have 5 barred rock hens, all are 9 months old and all are healthy. With this cold snap, poop balls are freezing to their fluffy bum feathers. I'm guessing it is happening at night while they are roosting. Easiest way to deal with it? I feel so bad for them. Should I snip the poop off, or bring them in one at a time, thaw the poop, clean them and dry them?

I would pick get a warm washcloth and gently rub it over their bum to hopefully soften the hardened poo. Hope your chickens stay warm and healthy this cold winter season!

I'd snip it. My Orpingtons are bad about it. Mud balls galore in the summer too. I have one that needs done right now, thanks for the reminder. I trim it off with scissors.
p.s. Covering the birds head with a towel helps, if they resist.
