am i right in thinking that its ok to give my girls banana and melon skins?

havent done so yet, but if i thought it would benefit them / do them no harm i could easily give them the skins when i give them the fruit

what about pineapple skins - would they be ok too?

I don't know about banana skins but my chickens LOVE watermelon and cantelope rinds. They eat it down to almost nothing. They also love when I freeze the peels and bruised parts off of peaches and put in the run for them to nibble on during the heat.

You can feed them fruit peelings, but don't use acidic ones (like oranges, lemons, limes). But make sure they are still getting regular food though, too.

I doubt they will eat the banana peels. They won't eat citrus rinds. They will eat cucumbers,We feed ours all the fruit and vegetable leftovers from preparation as well as after meals. Great recyclers, these chickens.

Ours even like pineapple skins. One hen will pick up a piece and beat it against the ground until one of the little hexagonal sections breaks off. She swallows that whole, and then goes for another. When we have pineapple, we take the tops, bottoms, and skins out to the coop. They eat everything except the leaves . . . and then the leaves dry out a little and make great scrubbers for when the waterers get dirty.
