I get the impression that they may stop laying if fed a diet of ONLY fruit. Not enough protein to make eggs.
But for most of us who feed layer pellets or other food that meets their protein requirements, feeding some fruit on the side won't hurt a thing!!!
When the roma tomatoes we put on pizzas at work get "out of date" or over ripe, the boss gives them to me for the chickens. They will eat just about anything we put on pizzas, so I get scraps for them all the time when we clean stuff out, but leftover tomatoes are probably their favorite!
Mine love fruit - esp blueberries mixed in with their 'treat' - shhh - don't tell DH where the blueberries went! And they will pick a watermelon rind clean in no time. Funniest thing is to give them cherry tomatoes and watch them run around looking like they all have clown noses! I did hear to be careful about giving them older citrus or letting them get into the compost and getting into citrus as it ferments and they could get 'drunk' on it, though!
Well, I don't want drunk chickens! They are already loopy enough ;-) We hardly ever have left over oranges because they are so freaking good, butI'll pick up any fallen or rotten ones to make sure they don't get into it.
I don't think I read it here on BYC. I still remember the site had a tan background and the fruit thing was like a sidebox on the left. Whatever. I have decided after reading all your posts that I'm not going to believe it
