Fruit, Veg and Chickens

We hung a head of cabbage in the run and they didn't much care for it but when we hung the apples they went nuts. It was really fun watching them go after the apples as it was swinging around plus it made the apples last longer.

Oh, I bet that was hilarious. The local grocery store has lettuce at 2 for 1, so I think I'll try hanging that up for them.

I've been trying to think of which fruits/veggies/table scraps my girls don't adore. While they may like some better than others, my little fatties will eat everything. Their favorites seem to be the carbs: bread, rice & pasta, but they get a limited amount of these. They love all fruits & veggies, especially over ripe tomatoes & melons. They devour every meat imaginable, especially CHICKEN!! In my household, it's a fight over who gets they leftovers: the dogs or the hens!

I was doing a bit of googling and found somewhere that grapes were a favorite of their flock, apparently because they bounce and roll around it
provides good entertainment for the owner too :D

I love the entertainment factor too! Mine adore cherries and they makes for a fun game of keep away. They also love blueberries and can often been seen jumping to pluck (just the ripe ones) them from a bush I have in the back yard. No so much on bananas and mushy things. They seem to be a little ODC about keeping their beaks clean. I give them just about everything but you can really tell what they love as opposed to what's just ok.

My girls get all precooked scraps from the kitchen, as well as leftover fruit from my roachbreeding section.

Weirdly, they aren't crazy about red coloured fruit...

Oh yes....! They go Lady Ga Ga about bread, but don't chuck big pieces in....they like it when you roll the bread into little balls!

Question: Are rhubarb leaves (just the leaves) poison for chickens? I know humans can't eat them but I don't know if chickens can. I don't want to hurt my chickies. lol My parents have a small garden and I get lots of scraps, leaves, broccoli heads, onion heads, whatever from the garden and give the 4 ladies and the 1 who knows. lol We don't know if it's a rooster or not. It's a BO and I have seen pics of roosters & hens but the one we can't tell looks a little like both. Oh well...back to my original question. Mom wants to give the chickies some leaves from the rhubarb but we don't want to until we are sure. I figured I'd ask on here since I get a lot of great info from here!! Thanks!

ermm I'm not sure, I have read that rabbits cannot have rhubarb but I am unsure as to chickens.

For now my guess would be if you're not sure then don't risk it. I'm sure someone will reply with
a more knowledgeable answer.
