Fruits and Veggies?

Yeah, it's all about the amount you eat. Many fruit seeds contain trace amounts of cyanide, but it would take a lot to harm you or the chickens. I don't dump huge piles opf seeds where they can get o them if I'm canning or making jelly, for example, but a few randon seeds won't hurt them.

Frankly, a lot of the recommended treats contain things that can hurt you, but it would take eating a tremendous amount before you or they had bany bad effects.

Ive heard that apple seeds are toxic, but if the chicken doesnt eat a lot then it wont kill him. Im sure if you throw an apple in their run, they will be fine. The Chicken Treat Chart here on BYC says "Apple seeds contain cyanide, but not in sufficient quantities to kill."

EVERYTHING contains things that are harmful if you eat too much. Sugar, cholesterol, triglycerides, fiber, calcium, iron... Eat too much of any of these and you can get sick, die, or be in a lot of pain.

I believe one has to eat at least half-cup of apple seeds, crushed, to approach a lethal dose. I'm not sure what the chicken dosage would be.

I have a nutrbullet that you make human shacks and drinks and you put all veggies and all fruit except for Apple seeds they say you can't eat. :(

You're right, flowerchic. Apple seeds contain cyanide, just like peach seeds do. Eating a few won't hurt you, but a large buildup could be dangerous. I knew that about peach seeds, but didn't know it about apples until I looked it up.

The minimum dose for cyanide poisoning requires a human being to eat roughly 3 cups of ground up apple seeds. You're not going to poison yourself, and neither are your chickens, unless you're actively trying to do it.

Chickens like raw sweet corn also.

A little redneck entertainment for everyone:
When we had to much sweet corn on hand, my dad would tie a string to the end of an ear and hang it from a low branch. 3 or 4 hens would start pecking at it & man that sucker would start swinging!! It was comical to watch a group of hens chasing that ear of corn around!
