Frustrated about the availability of chicks

Ideal & Mt Healthy have availability, Ideal is late July but better than nothing.

I agree w her. And all towns should allow people who own their property to have chickens (w restrictions in neighborhoods). I think it’s a given that anyone who has any animal/pet should have knowledge and supplies (leashes and kibble for dogs, litter box and cat food for cats, etc). It’s not her fault that people don’t do research. Stores who sell chicks should be required to give out a handout with basic chick care, and tell customers the basics of what chicks need.

Mt Healthy and Ideal both have Orpingtons left this season if you are still wanting them. Ideal won’t charge your card until a few days before they ship (if you need the tax return to pay for them).

I didnt really want to have them shipped ideally because of the risk of them dying but we found a hatchery in Denver that has orpingtons and Cochins hatching the 15th. I contacted them ASAP and we should be all locked in. Nothings finished or ready right now because hubby got sick so he had to stop. Thank you though! Ill still look

Last time I was in Tractor Supply all they had was a handful of guineas. Those of you trying to expand your flocks this year have my sympathy.

This January I checked my local pet supply store's website daily so I could call and order the day they posted. They told me I was the very first to order chicks from them this year. I'm glad I did...but now I wonder if they are actually going to be able to get them in....

Right now I'd bet that the H5N1 virus will decimate baby chicks (since there is currently no vaccine for the H5N1).

There is one in my country, but not available yet.
Last year they tested on broilers with succes. This year they are testing with chicks who become laying hens for the first time.
It seems the vaccine’s effectiveness is not the problem. The export is. The eggs can only be sold in our country.

The chick craze is insane. Every store around here has been selling out within fifteen minutes to an hour, besides rooster chicks, of course. We were able to get chicks a couple days ago after waiting in line for two hours. Didn’t get quite the kinds we wanted, but at least we found some…

You can’t…unless you want cockerels. Unless I’m seeing something wrong, none of the hatcheries have female chicks available.

Many are cockerel only until the August timeframe.

My local store always gives an instruction sheet. But I also feel people need to make sure they have the set up ready and do their research.

In a couple of months there will be lots of started pullets for free when folks start to realize that they are more work and trouble than they thought, and that they won't get eggs for months yet. Just like all the Covid pups dumped at the shelters, when people went back to work.

The Country Store will send a text to you to let you know when chicks arrive. Our local store gives out a number to you when you indicate you want to buy one of their newly arrived chicks. Although I was in the store for close to an hour, I left with 6 baby chicks. If, after everyone that came in with a number had what they wanted, they would let you buy more than six. Fair way in a time when chicks are hard to get.

If only I was settled down in life I’d open a rooster rescue, but I’m twenty-three and need to work.
