Well, I have 1 week old chicks and probably won't be vaccinating them.

I purchased from JeffersPet the syringe and needles and vaccine....the syringe and needles are WAY too big! Then I don't know how much .2 mL is anyway since on the syringe it is marked 1 mL, 2mL, etc.....with all the little lines prior to each mL. How do you all know what .2 mL is on the syringe. I now have to find smaller syringes and needles. No, I cannot by any at any pharmacy here at all without a prescription. Tried that already. So, now I have to once again go online and try to find somewhere to purchase these without paying an arm and a leg. Very frustrated!

If someone can tell me how to tell where .2mL is on a syringe, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks,
Kari

I seem to remember that 2ml=2cc

so every 1 ml=1 cc

cc and ml are the same thing
1 tsp = 5 mL or cc
1 Tbsp = 15 mL or cc
1 ounce = 30 mL or cc

So, for .02 ml= .02 cc

Hope that helps!!

Hey!

I make IV bags for a living and 1mL = 1cc. Depending on the syringe, the lines are probably marked in 0.1mL or 0.01mL. The marks are always evenly spaced so you can just divide or it might be easier to see if your local vet or pharmacy can get an insulin syringe for you, these are 1mL syringes and are marked in 0.01mL increments.

So, the 2nd little line would be .2 mL? The little lines under 1 mL? I have worked in the medical field for 25 years so I know that cc and mL are the same thing etc....I just have never given shots and don't know what line to fill the syringe up to is all. Thanks for the input.

Kari

I ordered syringes online. I cannot get any at all from a pharmacy without a prescription. No pharmacy in my area will allow it. So, they will be almost 2 weeks old when they get vaccinated.

Wish I could help you more on the measurements... I am looking at my little syringes I have here for the cats, and they are oral syringes.

I think it is possibly a diff measurement

d_catt88 had a good idea about the insulin syringes... I know a lot of pharmacies will let you have just the plastic measurer.

Good luck!!!

There is no way that you can measure .02 cc (that is 2/100 of a cc -cc is the same as ml). That is a truly miniscule amount and the only way to do that would be to dilute it and then administer the appropriate volume of the diluted solution. You could get a tuberculin or insulin syringe to measure 0.2 cc (2/10 of a cc) which is still a tiny volume. Call the company and get an explanation that makes sense to you, and have them send you the appropriate supplies.

Better check the volume - I vaccinated my chicks and my recollection is that the volume to give was 0.2 ml, not 0.02 ml. The best syringe to use is a 1 ml syringe - a tuberculin syringe. Also, I recall that they recommended a needle gauge that was way too large for a little chick in my opinion. I used a very fine needle - like a 25 or 27 gauge, 1/2 inch needle. You can buy the syringes and needles at a feed store or from your veterinarian or from a pharmacy, I think.

You should be able to get insulin syringes at any pharmacy. I buy them by the box full. They are usually 1cc. And there are numbers all the way up to 10 along the side. You just give each chick 20 units.

So, a full 1cc syringe will vaccinate 5 chicks. Also, I found that if you get a syringe that has a removable needle it is easier to fill them up by taking the needle off and leaving it in the cap and then putting it back on, you just have to be careful not to touch any parts that are sterile.

ETA: Mine are tuberculin slip tip needles. They are 25 5/8 guage - 1 ml. I get them at Walgreens.

I meant .2 mL and I meant they are 1 week old. I am very tired so I have some typos and didn't realize it. I ordered some syringes/needles online. They should be here in 3-4 days. I will just see if I can figure it out. I will do them 1 at a time because my luck I will shoot the entire 1 mL into 1 chick. I am guessing then that the little lines under 1 mL = .2 mL. That has been my question. Well, I will figure it out and if not then they won't get vaccinated.

Thanks for everyone's replies.

A 1 ml needle will have numbers up it that count to 10.

Some of them even say .1. .2, .3.....

You need to inject .2, only giving to the .1 is not enough. So, like I mentioned previously, you can give five chicks a vaccination with one needle. If you give too little it will not work and you have defeated your purpose and all the time & money spent.

You can fill each needle to the .2 or 2 mark if you think that will help you.

ETA: I found this picture on the internet. It looks just like what I am using now. See the .2 mark?
