I don't know about anyone else, but building the coops is just about as addicting to me as the chickens themselves. The house we're renting had a nice big coop when we moved here, and since then I began building chicken tractors to supplement my income, and three other tractors, brooders or broody hutches for my own enjoyment and use.

There's just something so marvelous about building something with my own two hands that can then be filled with lovely little chickens and ducks! My dad is a carpenter, so I guess I just come by it naturally.

The current trouble is, my dear and wonderful, usually patient and tolerant fiance has decided that he cannot, under any circumstances, put up with any more coop-building around here. The noise is driving him out of his mind.

I totally understand his predicament. He works out of the house and sales are slow, so the stress level is high. No one who's stressed wants to hear very power tools at close range all day.

But, whether I understand or not, that leaves me with piles of wonderful free coop-building materials that I've gathered from here and there, chickens needing more space, and no opportunity to build anything for them.

Anyone have this issue? Just for the heck of it, here's the coops I've built so far before this sad work stoppage:

My first coop ever

The coop I built that was 100% free, yipee!

And my last build, now holding my prized Penedesencas and Silkies:

Who's addicted? Not me!!

I understand what you mean. I don't plan on building more coops but mine has my attention alot. Early in the morning before going to work and after work, and on Saturdays. It needs to get done and I can't saw a board early in the morning for fear of making too much noise for the neighbor or my family. I end up taking the board into my garage to saw it. Silly things you have to do to satisfy your urge to pound a nail or use a drill or saw.
Hang in there!

Thanks Sam! I'm hangin'!

We don't have a garage, but we do have a flat concrete area a few hundred yards from the house on the other side of a biiiiig tangle of brambles. I'm thinking with enough extension cords, maybe I'll be far enough from the house to make a little noise.

With all the urban chicken keepers sprouting up in Seattle, you'd think you could make some nice extra cash $$$$ putting those on Craigslist. My friend drove from West Seattle up to Stanwood to pick up a coop for a tidy sum! Maybe the man of the house should carry his cell phone outdoors and help out, he would probably feel better- my coop building hobby is cheaper than therapy and makes me forget my stressful job for a moment.
I wonder if you could drive a chicken tractor onto a ferry like a bicycle...

You go for it! Build those coops! You are doing a great job and it's fun, plus you get to use your creativity and try to do it without spending a lot of money. Do you need me to send you an extra extension cord!?

That it is so true about the therapy it is. I really enjoy it and the break it gives me from the others things I do. In fact, I jokingly have said that I would like to travel around the country with my son who also has a building talent, and build chicken coops for people out of old barn wood. It would be my retirement !

Instead of ext. cords, get yourself a cordless saw and drill. I love mine so much! And for some reason, I cut straighter with it too!?!

You are building some great coops! Hope you get to keep it up!
