Hi! I am a newbie to this whole chicken experience. I currently have pullets, 3 partridge bantams, 4 black sex link and a Rhode Island Red Rooster. The bantams and rooster where together from the previous owner. They all free range during the day on over 3 acres. I can get 3 more partridge bantums from the same previous owner that could be added to the flock in a month or so. Or is it best to go with a barred rock pullets?I know mixed flocks can get along, I'm just not sure how nice the rooster will be. He is younger than my current bantums that are supposed to start laying in August/September. Anyone else have full size Roos with bantums?

Welcome1 I have both bantams and big chickens, and roosters of both sizes. Birds that grow up together tend to stay as families, regardless of breed, so I raise the bantams separately from the big birds if possible, so they bond with their own breed types. A large rooster will be too much for a little hen. A younger cockrel will respect the older hens, even if they are smaller. Mary

Thanks for your response! I actually got the Rhode Island Red rooster and 3 bantums hens from my neighbor. She incubated the other 3 bantums from her hens. Since the flock is young and would be growing up together, is it still not good to have the RIR with 6 bantums? My neighbor also has a bantums rooster I could trade the RIR for. Thoughts??
