I seriously doubt any landlord even thinks about pets including chickens when they say pets are allowed. Despite what some people (not me) on this board think, to the majority of people (me included) chickens are farm livestock.
Thanks.
Yes, My lease let's me have pets, but in most peoples eyes Chickens are not thought of as such. But she knows I have The Parakeets & a Cat & Doves/Pigeons who will be shipped to me. She also knows I'm getting Dogs (been on a wait list 3 years in contact with the breeder for 5 years...The breed is Briard & they are over 75lbs.) & English Angora rabbits & Quail. Now She ask a few questions about the quail (how big are they, where do I plan on keeping them ect. & I told her they fit in the palm of your hand & I use then to clean the bottom of my Doves/Pigeons flights & she said that was okay for me to have) So that's about 30 or so animals, most of which are the Doves & Pigeons. After the Chickens I'm done...really have no want to get much of anything else.
But I didn't bring up the peeps out of fear? IDK.
My new house is a 4 bedroom 2.5 bath, I have a 2 year lease with the op. to buy if I want.
It is a 2008 reno. house & built in the early 90's, So I was going to use the bedroom like this:
1. Mine
2. Guest
3. Animal safe plants, Doves, Pigeons & Quail
4. Chickens & Rabbits
The half bath also going to be a wintering plant room, Since I live alone.
I could also finish finishing the basment (half finished) if I bought the house as well as fix the fence, but only if I buy it in a few years & then I'd do something with turning one of the garages into a coop that way they are still safe in the house & yet outside all at the same time.
I guess what I am saying is I'd like some little country life with all the city perks....
But the covered porch is going to be use as a garden place aswell & the back deck will have a small playhouse coop, But with the fence being only 4' I don't feel safe leaving the birds out unless I'm home & out their with them or have the door open. Which I can be at home 3-4 days a week with them. But I can't build anything bigger then 200 square feet with out getting a permit & the landlord dose not want me to kill the grass or build anything outside that's hard to move unless it adds value to the house. Plus I like having the birds inside with me where they are safe & can live without things trying to eat them & bugs drinking up their blood in a nice house 70F +/- all year round.
& Chickens are only livestock/farm animals b/c we say they are, I mean people keep dogs, cats, rabbits, Parrots as pets in the USA but they are animals & wild animals too & some of our pets in this country we haven't had domesticated no where near as long as we have poultry. & plus if you get Chicks as day olds they are only 3-4 days when they get to you, you can either raise them as pets or as barn birds, taming them down isn't hard at all in you start from day one, it's not like a 3 day old chick knows any better it's all in how you raise them & the breed...I'd need some not as flighty breeds. The Malaysian serama most popular pet in Malaysia, even over cats 7 dogs.
I'm just worried I guess b/c how many people keep city/subaruen peeps?
& If I were walking to chooks & a dog came up, I'd pick up the chicken, until we walked past.
I got the permit that let's me have more then 2 Dogs already. & the Cat will be an Inside outside cat & the Dogs, Bunnies & Chookies will have full run of the house, The only time I will cage them is when I'm not home to watch them, so I'd either put them in their cage or in the room ect. The Pigeon may be able to free fly if all gose well.
But I love to clean, I even bleach my Parakeet's cage down daily & change they papper in the morning & before I go to bed most days but not all. Cat boxes are scooped after each use which is about 5 times a day & emptied out every night & I vacum & mop everyday, So the diapers which I am faithfull on emptying them out when I scoop the cat or when I smell something is not hard for me, since I use panty liners & enjoy cleaning. But having them wear the diapers all the time & the health of that is a good point. but I keep a clean house & the animals poo & feather/fur is not a problem.
....I guess I am saying I am going to get a few Chicks, prob. all pullets? what is the best way to have them with out building something outside/killing grass & still be able to have them in the house atleast after dark, with out putting them in harms way or telling the whole block/world "I have Chickens." I don't mind the people nextdoor or even a house or 2 down knowing, I bet their kids would love it, but I just don't want to be the unpermitted petting zoo who's coop is closer then 50' away from a house. The landlord is a nice person but I just don't think she thought the "Larger Pets Welcome!" included fowl, or that it even passed her mind.
I'm most likely going to get one of each color/breed of something like Silkies, Saramas, Bantam ture Ameraucana, Bantam Frizzled Polish ect. the very cute little guys, most people don't think of when they hear the word Chicken. I hope they will see the Silkie as a walking cotton ball...lol, if I get a while one I know I'm going to get SQ so that should be easy enough.
I just want to know the best way to turn a 2,489sq. (basment not incul.) house into a place wear I can have my pets & everyone be happy.
