Full time house Chicken

B/c I am getting one hell of a deal with owner financing at at less then 0.5% & they are legal in the city just my yard I'd have to own before I could make it legal. It's in one of the best parts of town on a family centered street & very near a bus line.

I would be soooo blessed if I got this place!

So I either get my Chickens now & for 2 1/2 -3 years they are inside birds, how I like them or I wait until I most likely buy the house in a few years time, which I really really don't want to wait.

& the walks are just for exercise & to get them out of the house & you can & I have walk a chicken just like you would with a dog. I have walked my Mother's shep./chow mix next to my old golden comet hen & polish/silkie roo of a 2' 3 way-coupler. it's the diapers that would help with the mess.

I really, really don't want to wait for a may or may not kinda thing.
& even if something happened & I was not aloud to keep them anymore my Mother still have the poultry farm in upstate new york & would be happy to take them.

So I don't know what I should do. It's been just over 2 years since I'v had Chicken & in one night I went from thousands to nothing & I miss them so. Even more then I miss my family by far. So...??

It sounds like you made up your mind. I do love animals, have a variety of species and most recently added my(now) 6 chickens. However, I would never keep them in the house as pets. I am fortunate to own my house and have a big yard. Watching my girls being able to roam the yard every day makes me realize that depriving them of at last some daily outdoor time where they can be chickens would be cruel. You also have to make sure that your chickens can be safe in the house.....many chickens have been injured or killed by owners own dogs. So what are you going to do if your dog accidentally or intentionally hurts or kills a chicken wandering around the house??? Do you think it is realistic to walk each of the 6 chickens you want to get individually? Will you have enough space to confine the chickens indoors for long periods of time (and I just mean a work day)? Chickens that do not have enough space and that also may become bored can hurt each other, even kill each other. Aside from problem with your landlord and possibly neighbors you have to keep the welfare of each living breathing creature in your care in mind. Most people that have large numbers of 'pets' have the best intentions but eventually cause harm to animals as they can not properly care for all. I can understand folks that have a house chicken due to circumstances....or even a couple of little Seramas or banties. I am not sure that your idea of 6 chickens, some of the ones you mentioned being standard size birds, is a good idea. Also, these chickens could live for many years, what will your situation be in 2 years???? Or if you get evicted or have to get rid of the chickens?? Your landlord may just draw the line at adding more animals, especially chickens to your household. You should truly consider getting just 2-3 smaller chickens and a chickentractor. I do not mean to offend you or anyone else but I truly hope you will give this plan some more thought. After all, you are taking on responsibility for living creatures, they deserve a safe and appropriate environment. Thinking that you are an animal lover may not be enough . Just my 2 cents, I hope whatever you do will work and not be a bad experience for any animal or human involved in the situation.

I am a full time Vet Tech. I have 4 dogs, a cat, & 11 chickens. I couldn't even imagine having the energy to clean up after, & give proper attention & care to over 30 animals, and still work a full time job & have any sort of social life at all. It makes me tired just thinking about it.

Della, it's time for some tough love here. Absolutely DO NOT add any more animals to what you already have planned until you've brought in your landlord, giving them ALL the details about your animals having free run of the house, and your desire to add chickens to the equation, as well. That is NOT YOUR HOUSE - at least not yet - and you have no right to use it like a combination greenhouse/livestock barn without the fully informed consent of the owners (your landlord). I do not believe for one minute that you have been entirely forthcoming with them about your plans to have all those animals (particularly uncaged keets, quail, pigeons, doves, and chickens) and using whole bedrooms as coops or rabbit hutches. If you had been entirely truthful with your landlord, you wouldn't be here asking softhearted BYC'ers how to add chickens to this menagerie without alarming both neighbors and landlord - not to mention any local laws that govern keeping farm animals in a residential area.

I, for one, will not encourage you or condone your actions. I think you're being dishonest and irresponsible. Quite frankly, if I were one of the moderators of this forum I would delete this thread immediately.

Couldn't agree more. It is very clear tho she's going to do exactly what she wants to despite what we have said and despite the selfishness that it shows towards all the animals she's planning on having. I agree the landlord probably has no idea just exactly what she's planning on doing or how many animals she's planning on keeping penned in the house.

I think the OP knows very well that the house will look and smell very bad for a very long time regardless if she thinks is a nasty smell, I think her lanlord's property will be ruined. I have a BIL that is just like this, he has way too many animals in his rented house looks and smells like the city dump and he doesn't care one bit what others think, regardless of the fact that nobody ever comes to visit because they can't stand the mess and the smell. I never go in and have told my DW that I will not or ever let my young daughter into that pig stye, it has created problems.

I hope the OP does pay close attention to what we are saying but something tells me she won't, because there are too many others on here that will be encouraging this discusting lifestyle. OP........... Please reconsider and for one second think of others.

I have HAD house chickens before. When I first got into seramas I was sooo worried about them being outside I kept my 4 in the basement office which has no carpet. They live there in the winter but I tell ya what I am more than eager to get them outside once the freezing temps are no longer an issue! DUst, dander, poop, noise, all that stuff is definately a factor. I have had up to 15 birds in that room (again just over the winter) and as much as I tried to keep up with the mess poo was flung where no poo had gone before ie: walls, floor, ceiling, windows ect. Not to mention what all that dust did to the furnace ducts.... Not a good idea at all. Rabbits and chickens in a room together would be full of ammonia smalls in no time flat. I agree with Motherjean. Out of respect for the homeowner and her property I wouldn't go there. Being a homeowner myself I have had my fair share of bad tennants including some friends of ours who rented our basement until they could find a house of their own. They had a min pin and I tell ya that little stinker DESTROYED the basement, shredded carpet, scratched the g;lass in the patio doors, pee'd on EVERYTHING including the verticle blinds over the patio doors. I was amazed such a little dog could be so destructive. We got nothing for the damages and because it was on a "friend basis " with no lease or anything we got stuck paying to repair things. Chickens really do NEED to be outside. There is NO WAY you can take a chicken for a walk to the park and not have word spread Quicker then flies on poo about your walking the chickens. Lots of nosey drama causing neighbors in every neighborhood. It's bound to come back n bite ya. Be up front and honest with the landlord, tell her your plans and let her voice her opinion on that. WHo knows maybe she would be ok with a few *backyard* hens then there would be no need to hide them.

I live in a suburb where chcikens are illegal now. I am not grandfathered in because I had them before they changed the law. I don't hide em, they free range everyday, they come when they are called and they are really good about staying in the yard (about an acre)
I know the time will come when they tell me I have to part with my babies. Until then I am not changing a thing.

I have read this forum twice just to make sure I did not miss something did anyone notice that she said she has a permit to get more then 2 dogs, and the dogs she is talking about getting are over 75lbs each that is at least 3 big dogs she is getting as puppies a cat and other animals to bring the number to 30 animals before the chickens. this is to many animals for one person in a city to have I own my own home and yes I have animals and chickens but my chickens free range my back yard all day the only chickens I had in the house were the 4 babies I got this spring as soon as the weather was warm enough they were out side and until then they went out side for hours during the day when it was warm and inside at night I think the OP that wrote this has a problem she almost seems like a hoarder if you want this many animals she needs a farm and getting 3 puppies while taking care of the other animals plus having birds and chickens I think you will find yourself over your head. I am sorry but I can not believe that a land lord would agree to allow any one to have that many animals in the house here you are lucky if you can have one dog or a cat, I feel sorry for all those animals there is no way you can give all those animals the care and love that they need using bedrooms for animals and keeping them caged all day is not right for them I worry that this is a health hazard for all involved the person and the animals and to bring that many animals into a house is just crazy I can understand having a couple of bantams or one house chicken but that is it, having as many animals as she is talking about is just not fair to anyone and there is no way that she could keep up on the mess and work. either she is not telling the landlord the truth or she is telling us is not true but I can not for the life of me understand someone living in town and having that many animals in one house. to the OP you need to find a place in the country or you need to re think the amount of animals you are trying to take care there is just not right and something is not adding up. and why did you have thousands of birds and then in one night they are gone. and you miss them more then your family what happened that you would lose that many birds and why did you have so many birds There are more questions then answers in your post. Like I said things aren't adding up there are something I don't think you are telling us and there are a bunch of things I don't think you are telling your landlord I think you need to come clean with everyone.
