This is Mr. Don't have a name yet. His parents I believe are a buff orpington and a cuckoo maran. I was thinking of keeping this little sweet rooster around, and was wondering if I could get any interesting looking mixes out of him. I have listed below what females I have available for his mating options. So what do you guys think. What do you think the most interesting end result would be out of this boy and which girl listed below.

Lady Options:
Barred Rock.
Sussex.
Jersey Giant, Black.
Partridge plymouth rock.
Black sex-link.

Also he needs a name, he is the sweetest young roo ever, jumps on your shoulder and snuggles when he sees you.

Is your sussex speckled? I'd do that, and then cross offspring back to eachother. I wonder if you can get the spangling and barring at the same time. That would be crazy!

WOW!

Update us with pics as he grows up! Sorry I don't know enough to make a suggestion here for breeding but have fun with him!

If your Sussex is speckled - Do that. The rest will just make black or barred offspring. Love the boy, though! Not everyday you see that color. Not sure on name. Should be something different, though.

If you only have five hens, cross him on all of them, and see what you get! (Mark the eggs so you know which chicks come from which hen -- then you'll know which breedings to repeat.)

Since the "Speckled" gene is recessive, you would have to cross the offspring with each other to get the speckling, then you would only get it in about 25% of the offspring. You might see the speckling in the juvenile plumage in the first generation but not likely in the adult plumage. Just giving a reason for why HappyMtn said to cross the offspring. I think that could be real interesting. If you have the patience, I'd say go for it.

If you want interesting results in the first generation, I'd suggest crossing him with the Black Sex Link. Since they are both crosses, you don't know what you will get. I'm not sure of the actual makeup of your Black Sex Link, usually a RIR rooster over a Barred Rock hen, but there are several different mixes that could give you a black sex link. You could wind up with barred, wheaten, or columbian for pattern, and buff, yellow-gold, red, black, white and for colors. Probaly some patterns and colors I can't thik of could happen could show up.

According to Henk's calculator you can wind up with both Speckled and Barred a couple of generations down.

with a barred hen, then cross the offspring. It is amazing what you can get.

Yes, with some work, you can get the barred and mottled pattern at the same time. The roo you have is most likely heterozygous barred and if that's the case, crossing him with a Speckled Sussex should give gold colored F1 offspring, they would all be split mottled ( carrying one cope of the mottleing gene) and half of them will be barred.

Then do a sibling cross of the best barred roo on the best barred hens and that should give Buff/Red Cuckoo, Buff/Red Columbian, Buff/Red Milled Fleur, and the Buff/Red Cuckoo Mille Fluer that you are going for.
