As a kid, I used to love to gather eggs with my paternal Grandma on their farm in eastern Nebraska. Many years later when my DH and I bought some property for our horses with plans to eventually build a house and retire there. I decided I wanted chickens and had 25 beautiful layers and raised 25 meat chickens. A couple years later, my DH got cancer and passed away and I became a rather young widow. I gave away my chickens when I sold my farm property. I only had 5 layers left...a coon had killed all the rest shortly before my DH died.

I have always wanted to be out in the country and this was such a long hard winter, I really had a bad case of wanderlust when spring started to happen. Rather than going thru all the hassle of moving to the country, I called our village clerk and found out he thought it was okay to have a few chickens, as long as the neighbors don't complain. Instead of moving to a farm right now (which I WILL do someday) I decided to get chickens and move the farm to us! My present DH was sweet enough to help me build a little coop. I'm just hoping I can get away with keeping chickens.

I've forgotten most all I knew about chickens and am having a blast re-learning all the old stuff and also learning all the new stuff about them! This forum is my second home online now!!

My younger brother's first grade class hatched some eggs. My brother won a chick in a raffle. As she grew up, my mom got her a companion, and then another, and another, and another, lol. The most we ever had at one time was 5, and that was only for a short period of time when my sister had gotten a chick that grew up to be a boy, so we had to give him away.
Six years with no chickens, I finally convinced my mom to let us have some again. The main appeal is the fresh eggs. Its a step towards self-reliance, and it gives us something to trade with a friend who is always bringing over fresh produce. So for now, I have four pullets, and am trying to add two or three more, if I can find them anywhere!
Does anyone have any idea where I can get 2 or 3 maran and EE pullets?
