Was out socializing with my 4 week olds today and went outside to open the windows up wider and this grasshopper made the mistake of climbing up the outside of the coop. So I decided to catch it and bring it in to the chicks!
Now, when I first put my chicks out in the coop last week-end, I honestly thought I had "chicken" chickens...as they would run screeching from ANY bug that flew in the coop ( even the tiniest little knat fly ) and this seemed to go one for days! I swore another fellow BYC poster to secrecy in a PM, as I was embarrassed that my chicks were "chicken" chickens.
Well, that grasshopper no sooner hit the floor when one of the chicks picked it up and ran for her little life, hollering and running all around the coop. She ducked, and turned, ran the other way, lost the bug to another, that one did a straight run under the feeder, hit a group, that got interested, and turned on a dime and....lost the bug to another chick...this went on for 20 minutes, atleast!! That grasshopper never got a chance to jump, before it became the main bug of choice for a great game of keep away...
I never did get to see which one finally got to eat it, as so many got ahold of it and it changed beaks sooo many times before getting eaten!!! It was a huge grasshopper too!!!
I am proud to say, I no longer have "chicken" chickens
