Out In The Sticks
Just for fun!

I have this one chicken, a hen. We call her Miss Hen. First, she is quite the smart little bird. Second, she is an escape artist! Third, I am not sure, but it's entirely possible she thinks she's a dog. And lastly, no matter what we try, she insists on roosting on our front porch at night. Yeah... kind of messy. She chases the cats away from their food. Most of the time, she is quite happy to sit on the porch with the dogs. When it storms, she goes inside their crate that is on the porch and won't let them in! She is very gentle and allows us (me and boys) to handle her without a fuss. She keeps trying to sneak into the house with us. She has succeeded a couple of times. That's a real treat. Once inside, she does NOT want to be caught and put back outside. I have two rather nice coops in a chicken run. She hates them. She is also very much the favored pet... and I think she's figured that out and is playing it for all it's worth. I would kind of like for her to coop in her coop at night. If we start moving her off the porch and into the coop, she then waits till after dark to get onto the porch. I haven't figured out where exactly she goes. Our yard is fenced. The dogs can't get out. As long as she is in close proximity to them, no predator stands a chance. Nothing enters our yard. So she can hang out till we go to sleep and then sneak up onto the porch. Plus, trecking her out to the coop after dark is not the best idea. We do have snakes...

Anyway, it's kind of a cute story, but if you have any ideas... I'd love to hear them. And yes, that is her in my profile picture.

Sounds like she is needing a flock. So far, you are her flock, so she wants to be with you. You might consider getting one or two more hens. That would probably solve the cooping problem. She just needs a sense of security.

That makes sense. Her previous owner did let her in their house. She had a rooster that was the hen's best friend. They only got the rooster because of an error in sexing. They both moved out here with me since I'm not in town. Her roster was killed. She was all alone. We did buy new chicks for her. Most have died. There are three guineas left. So we bought more. She'll have a new flock soon.
