One of the reasons I enjoy BYC so much is it’s the only place I know of where people like chickens as much as I do…y’all GET me!

I wanted to start this thread so people could share short, funny or cute stories about their flock, with no pressure to continue updating or share more than that. Occasionally I’ll have something funny to say…but it isn’t necessarily enough to start a new thread. This is a one-and-done thread, but of course feel free to share as many stories as you would like!

I’ll start. My Ameraucana has now been dubbed…”THE MIDWIFE.” My girls are just starting to lay eggs. She has taken it upon herself to escort every pullet that goes into the coop during the day, and stay with them until they lay an egg. She did it to my first layer (before she started laying), then she laid next, and she continued with my next layer. Today 2 new pullets have been checking out th boxes, and she immediately stops what she is doing to follow them in.

Coop activity: she just purposefully paces around the coop, darting her head out the door and back around, until they leave the coop. She is not making any noise during this time, it’s almost like she wants to show them where to go and make sure they are ok! It’s so stinkin cute!

Cool story!

And I love Midwife!

Hmm, it's not much of a story, but my naked neck bantam pullet, Gwenyth, is a deep thinker apparently. Whenever I show her anything, whether it's a hand full of food or an interesting object, she studies it reeeeeal close with her neck stretched out and everything, frozen in time as if she has to slowly process what she's seeing. This morning, I took some leftovers out for the chickens to finish up and I let her have a go at the plate first, up out of reach of the older birds. Well, of course she had to stretch that neck out and really stare at the leftovers before she could partake. She stared for what felt like an eternity, at an entire plate of food that she had to herself for the moment, before she finally took a few pecks at it and started eating! 🤭

This is from a few days ago, but here's Gwennie:

She is incredible.

As you can see in my profile picture, the two silkies are having a staring contest. I was in the run, cleaning, and refilling water and food when I saw them. I thought maybe they were stuck together because neither moved. It felt like 10-minutes but was actually only about 3 minutes. The white silkie looked away first - so Chicken Little (the light brown one), moved up the pecking order from last to second to last.

Due to predators, my chickens live in a large open air covered run. I set up a fox trap, and the first thing I caught was my coop escapee buff orpington. Figures. Apparently the steak my son baited the trap with was a delight...

She didn't even care that she was trapped, she just sat in the trap eating the bait. My son went to pull her out, and she fought to stay in there, and then tried to take off again. Troublemaker! She passed away a few months ago, we suspect from reproductive issues. She was a sweetie otherwise - we miss that chicken.

Ditto! Following 😃

Nest boxes were built for hens to lay eggs, they're 15"x15" cozy, clean & soft with 3" of wood chips. The hens lay their eggs in the boxes, no problem there. Here's the funny part...I've often heard Rooster coos & Rooster song, (you know the sound a Roo makes when he let's hens know about a worm, & the sound a Roo makes like letting air squeak slowly out of a balloon), & when I peek inside, I see a Rooster in a nest box. I'm not sure what the purpose is, but while I have seen various Roosters walk in & out, & briefly visit nest boxes, this 1 Rooster, a sweet EE named Baby Roo, will hang out in a nest box for up to 20 minutes! A few times, hens tried to join him. Only 3 hens managed to fit along with him, & actually I was quite impressed that many chickens could fit simultaneously...I mean who knew? 😆 I'm not sure if they're trying to break a record, or just having fun. There's a record broken for how many people jammed into a telephone booth... Perhaps the chickens are trying to break a record as to how many can fit into one nest Box. 🤣
