We have 51 chickens, 15 of them being 2 year old laying hens. We are quite attached to some of these hens. We set a timer for a light at 4am to have them lay throughout the winter. At 4:10am on morning, my 18 year old daughter comes running into our room, crying, and yelling "something's getting the chickens!!!" My DH and I came flying out of bed (I was not so graceful as I had had a bit to drink the night before!) and rushed/stumbled outside in our underwear to save our poor chickens. We had forgotten to shut the coop door and our hens were standing outside. The light from the coop was on and my daughter's window faces the coop and she had the window open. The crazy loud clucking that she mistook for them being attacked was simply several of them laying eggs!! So I stand there in the yard, in my underwear and bear feet, covered in mud, and yelled "they're just laying eggs!!!" She stated, "oops, my bad. That's my blond moment for the day!" It's going to be a long time before she lives that one down!
