fussy chickens?

I just joined your group, thanks for having me. I live in a rural county east of Charlottesville VA. While we have lived here for 16 years, we only added a small flock of chickens last summer. I followed some local advice and adopted 6 three year olds, got a portable coop and use step in electric fencing to be able to move them around. I have very fussy eaters and would love to hear from anyone else with this problem.

You may want to post in the Feeds and Feeding section for some more information on picky eaters: Feeding & Watering Your Flock In what way are your chickens picky? I know that my chickens don't like certain foods (for example, apples and lettuce), but really enjoy tomatoes and cucumbers. They eat both crumbled layer feed and pelleted layer feed equally well, but often prefer to gobble down chick feed.
 
I have tried a few different kinds/brands of feed.. started with crumbles (which they just stared at), tried pellets, have found that usually they will eat the pellets or crumbles if I soak and make a mash for them. but they frequently will not touch that all day either. I work for a granola baking co, they gave me seeded sunflower seeds, they ate them one day and then turned their beaks up at that. They won't eat a lot of the vegetables and fruits that I read they should love.
I have a mix flock (like I said they all came from the same place so they were raised together) I have 2 red stars (my favorites) 2 Welsummers, 1 black star and 1 Ameraucana. Appreciate all suggestions and will look at the section on feeding
 
Chickens are very wary of strange things, if you can get one bird to eat it, the rest will usually follow. If they don't like one thing wait a few weeks till you try it again. I think they would love watermelon if available, and usually scrambled eggs, plain yogurt
 
I read on this site about chickens liking Yogurt, so I mixed some plain whole milk yogurt into their mash and we did a lot better today!! Thanks for all your comments.
