Birds do that. Chickens will eat anything out of the silver bowl of goodness... and my one tiel will eat anything it thinks you are eating. Including his pellets that he ignores unless you pretend to eat them first.

The chickens are holding out for the good stuff later in the day. Give them the "good stuff" irregularly, and they'll learn to eat their proper meals before filling up on snacks.
