Hello, I am in full chicken mode trying to find as much information I can about having back yard chickens in the outskirts of the city of Kokomo Indiana. I checked with ordinances and I'm getting conflicting information. I've raised in the past pigs, rabbits, and have been around other farm animals all my life. As I am retired and trying to be more self sustaining, I want to raise chickens! I have a garden and compost and look forward to adding to it with the chicken poo. A couple of summers ago, I picked up from a lady in Kokomo 21 large bags of composted chicken poo from her yard. You should of seen how big my tomatoes and pumpkins were last year!!!

Last I read, you can have 5 hens and no roosters. That's fine with me. There is an alley that runs down between the houses, and on both sides, the neighbors have let their backyards go wild. (Mostly rentals). My backyard is fenced in with 6' high cedar fencing. Behind one of my outbuildings and next to the fence is where I plan on having my coop and run. There will be room to get all around the coop area. That area is facing the east and the fence is on the south side. So basically it will be protected from the prevailing winds/weather.

I pretty much know what breed of chickens I want and have plans on the coop design and run.

So my two biggest hurdles currently are city code and my wife.

The wife is curious as to weather I can raise and take care of five chickens. I have been reassuring her for months now, I know what I'm doing. She probably won't be doing anything with the brood. She doesn't get out much, she doesn't like the cold or the heat, or too many bugs.

Any help with my concerns would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome! I’m excited for you! Sure sounds like some good planning so far. I would definitely get ahold of the code enforcement officer (or the appropriate person/department) and nail them down about the ordinance before proceeding, though.
Upkeep for 5 chickens is very do-able and I doubt your wife will object much, particularly if she has use for the eggs. I am a confirmed optimist though. lol
What breed have you chosen?
