Hi all! I'm Brenda and I live in Dahlonega, GA, North Georgia where the beautiful mountains are! I'm preparing to have 12 chickens this spring and I can't wait! Been studying different breeds and learning all about chickens. I'm going to build my coop in a couple of months with some help of course! Any tips about good docile breeds would be helpful, so far I'm looking at ameraucana, Plymouth Rock, Rhode Island, Maran, Sussex, and Wyandotte.

Hi Brenda, welcome to BYC!

It's fun deciding which breed to get, there are so many and they are all wonderful for various reasons. Of the breeds you mention, I have Rhode Island, Barred Rock and Sussex. Of those, the Sussex are the sweetest in our flock. They are active foragers, docile and chatty. We have the Speckled ones and their colors are so pretty. You could go with a mixed flock and get a couple of each breed you are interested in to see the differences in laying habits, egg color, behavior, etc.

You might like to say hi to other members in GA, maybe get their opinions too. Here's a link to get you to the GA state thread:

Whatever you choose, enjoy them!

Thank you so much for the info
