Fuzzy's Farm

All the babies survived the day, they hid in the kennel and everyone pretended there was a door on it again.

Since it was so warm i unplugged the light when i got there. Today is their first night roosting on top of the kennel. I hope this loosens them up a little! The picking is already lessening,

It was also a day of roosterly love here, too.
Idk if sharma submitted or just because she's been following henry's heels and batting eyes but he tried to do his duty by her.... He was careful, but he kinda squished her (mini d'uccle, EE roo).......... She lay there a min and i got worried because she seemed stunned; I picked her up and after a minute she was her usual self. She didn't show fear of henry after, so i think it was a case of "grass is greener" gone wrong, lol. Maybe she'll accept maurice now and quit yearning after the big boys! (the d'uccle roo)

Oh, and dizzy me! I looked at the calendar and they are gonna be 10 weeks on mon, so i missed some time! waaay behind schedule. They just look so much smaller than i remember 10 weekers looking usually?

Hi Everyone! I've been down with the worst cold so haven't done anything at all. Way behind on all the news...
I was wondering ladies(and gent and kid that isnt really a kid lol ) .. i do a christmas card mailing list exchange on another forum on another site and i was wondering if anyone would like to pm me their address and I will send ya out a christmas card... I love doing them .. i mean its just a card but its fun and distracting for me ... would anyone like a christmas card from me ?
Would love to.
Carmel just got eaten... I want to cry. She was the sweetest little silkie... hawk... not 50 feet away from people, and it got her...
Oh, I'm so sorry, Nova.
I looked at hardware cloth today, not cheap! Biggest i could find was only 3' x 10'. ??? . Why don't it come taller???
I couldn't do a true free range, it's illegal to kill hawks and i'd be too angry...........
"uncle" saw the big hawk a week ago, (the one i battled over my chickens this summer with the 3' wing span) and DH saw what we believe to be a coyote today, not 50' from the shed! (100' from the coop!) I saw tracks the other day but was hoping it was a stray dog; DH says not to worry but i don't like the idea of a coyote so close when i'm wandering out of the coop just after dark :(
I got mine off Amazon. Even free shipping. I got the 4'X50' and it works great.
That sob hawk was back again today. I purposely waited to let the birds out this morning until late... Anyway, I was reading a book and I heard the alarm, ran out the front door, no socks or shoes or coat, and there was that hawk chasing Fritz the Jerk around under the thicket! Fritz is fine, all hens and chicks and roosters accounted for. I just spent the last 1.5 hours walking around outside to make sure it didn't come back..
I have a good friend that swears by putting corn out and attracting crows. He says crows will run off hawks - he's never lost a chicken to a hawk attack so maybe it works...
Roger Jr is crowing it up in the garage. LOL. I can't believe how big he is compared to his siblings... well sibling.

So... That hawk was not detered by me for very long. No, it didn't get one of my birds after all. It set its sites on neighbors GLW pullet. Carl was outside working on his new run, digging a trench to bury the skirt when he heard the commotion. He looked up and not 30 feet from him, there that darn hawk was on top of his GLW, he yelled at it, and it took off. The GLW was stunned, but other than that, she's alright. This is one determined bird. To not be afraid of the neighbor to the point of attacking the chicken with in a stones throw away. And it wasn't like Carl was standing still either! I had just gone back in the house, had been patroling the yard cuz it is kinda hard to get 32 scared chickens to go into the run. Some were in, some were in the garage... I would not be surprised if I didn't get hardly any egg tomorrow...

GAH! What a hair ripper of a day. I am glad I didn't have to work today, Or I am pretty sure Fritz would have been a snack. I need some fake owls. I am thinking of putting up a few scare crows and moving them about the yard... LOL it'll be something new...
I saw a solar owl on Amazon that rotates it's head. It was 35.00 plus free shipping so I guess not too expensive if you consider losing girls.
What did you use, by chance? I've never been able to make a good recommendation for a hawk wound :( I wondered because if i knew what didn't work, maybe it would narrow down what would??? Worth a shot.
Vetericyn!!!! I swear it's miracle stuff.
I made these for my bro and his girl for his B-day...

Who wants some beards for X-mas???

Well, my roos decided to go on a hen killing spree this afternoon. 2 held the hens down while the biggest ripped feathers off the back of their heads...My BR hen looks scalped like my hawked girl did... WTH???
So... Long story short... I only have one roo left... that pretty silkie roo.
BF put Nugget down. He was no longer able to stand and would lay on his side and kick his right leg. His left foot looked kinda wonky like it wasn't working right. So BF did the deed and Nugget is no longer suffering.

Sad night here.

I'm so so sorry, Kim. I know how hard you tried to do everything you could for him.

Oh, that is so sad! I am so sorry! I had noticed a couple of super aggressive roosters a couple of weeks ago, and when I alerted my dad to them, he wasted no time in shooting them. It is sad that they have to die that way, but we had roos that were mean and they were spurring our faces! My lil bro got spurred right below his eyeball! So, they all died by a shotgun. I am so sorry for your losses.

Thank you...
Mom2em All is Kim... I am Ash... LOL. No big deal.

I hope Kim is well.

Thank you... and I am sorry for yours as well.
I only had one roo that actually came at me... we ate him... he was delicious.

Sorry you ended up having to put nugget down. Poor guy. You gave it a great effort though.

About roos who are hen aggressive... My RIR roo was hard on the girls. He was so very pretty, but after grabing by combs, and ripping the feathers out of the top of Leila's head, causing Buffy to hide out in the garage to get away, even my GLW's and SLW hid... he went to camp also. He was so nice around people... but he was just way to aggressive during mating. He was like a ninja rapist on them... They've got to go just as much as people aggressive roos...

Gigi, I sure hope you feel better soon. You may try ACV and honey in a cup of hot water, like a tea.... Good for you tummy, good for you immune system...http://healthyhanna.hubpages.com/hub/Raw-Apple-Cider-Vinegar-Cures. They aren't so much as CURES but nice natural relief.

Hi CFL, have you heard from Piper lately? We do miss her here.

Thank you...

Geesh, all I can say, Ash, is that my brain is on cold drugs. I know Mom2 is Kim but I couldn't even remember my password tonight - just want to crawl in the coop and sit with the girls and share the misery - ha. DH is sick also so we are a lovely pair right now.

I'll try the ACV Nova. I would like to take it regularly because I've been reading how good it is for you but, again spurred on by the cold brain, I took a swig out of the bottle and thought I was going to die. Not the brightest move. Yuckkkkk! Can't tell you how horrible that was. This time I'll make a tea with honey. Gotta be better cause it couldn't be any worse - lol.
