Fuzzy's Farm

I'm still hoping for advice sometimes

especially with natural treatments that are proven for chicken sicknesses. I intro'd the topic over there, but it came after my admission of using antibiotics for this snap and that my birds carry CRD/ MG. Always a controversial thing, i hate to even bring it up. I want people to get a chance to hear all sides, to make their own minds in case anyones flock comes down with it this awful winter. You' d think honesty was best, but last year you'd have thought i was the only one in MI with a sick flock after i admitted it!

If they do decide to treat they will need the info fresh in their minds so they can recognize it and do the treatment quick, before the lungs get too damaged.

no, you don't offend me! I like to talk "chicken"! It surprises me that you actually like my posting; i feel like much of my stuff is probably boring. LOL I started this thread with these guys as a place to "hang out" that was not judgemental. As you can see with robin and i, even our "disagreements" are not very harsh :D

Why don't you start posting??? It's been kind of quiet here. Me and Nova are working our tails off and haven't had much time for posting lately; i thought for a minute the thread had up and died! We don't really have a certain subject or anything.

Hi. I have to say your thread is one of the first ones I started to read when I joined and who led me to the michigan thread. I enjoy reading that thread but I will never post there again. I don't post on anything I don't have experiance on wether it be good or bad. I was simply trying to make friends with people who like chickens and animals as much as I do and might be around my age. Everyone around where I live that have chickens are old farmers and they keep dying on me. I value your chicken insight and thank you for sharing it with all that welcome it as I do. I meant now disrespect towards anyone in my posts on the other thread and I hope I have not offended you as I am the one who made the imtimidating remark. I pull for each and everyone of you through your troubles and cheer for the triumphs. I just don't post it. Once again I am truly sorry if I offended you. Hope you have a good weekend. Margie

Well you certainly didn't offend me lol. I don't go on there to be offended.
I have met some great friends from the Mi thread and even still we do things together. I will be eternally grateful for that. There is great people on there but you still have the smart alecs and the know it all's. I just don't care to deal with them. Guess I have been a farmer too many years to listen to that crap. I know what I'm doing and that's all that matters to me. But , you can make some awesome friends also.

Thanks so much. I feel my life is boring also so that's why I don't post much. I work full time then come home to my daughter and animals. Rest of the day is spent with her and them. I've been lucky that I haven't had to deal with illness in my flock just foxes and I took care of that by running outside in nightgown with bbgun screaming at top of my lungs. Haven't seen it since. :) I will try posting more often here thanks.

I work 6-7 days a week 2nd shift factory. Mostly what kind of work i've done; my last job was a cook in a retirement home. So being able to post while others are actually on here is a treat!
Sometimes i get excited about recipes; i like anything to do with art, outside in general; gardening, wild plants....... design, since i've bought a fixer upper trailer (It really is THAT bad, i was too embarassed to let nova see it even- not all the floor holes are fixed, no carpet yet, no functional kitchen, no interior doors) ... my bird's are at my DH's family's property so i have to drive to see them and take care of them. If you go to the "farm's" first post you can actually see the camper coop- nothing fancy *yet*. I'm hoping the overtime pays off this spring and at least a little of it goes to getting the girls in a new home! :)

So as you see we keep it pretty real here; Heck i don't even know if we have a decent vehicle amongst us here from MI ;) My birds are my pride and my joy. Idk what i'd do without them to keep me sane!

As long as my truck can haul hay and get me to work I'm happy. Its name is beasty if that gives you a clue. He runs ok most of the time. I'm interested in gardening. Planning on first garden this spring. Need to cut costs somehow. So canning will be another first this year. Helped my mom some this past year but not a lot. I also enjoy crafts mostly crochet but I can sew when needed. I worked in two factories sewing so the love has kinda gone out the door. Was a vet assistant for about 5 yrs till I needed more money than part time could do. Now I draw blood for a living. Love it. Love my patients. That's how I meet these old farmers. Lol.

My old truck was "old brown" lol

I gotta work tonight, not happy about it. I live close, so... but still...... in the morning i will have to make the treck to the girls. Scarey temps here, they are saying in the negative with 40 mph winds, bringing the windchill temps to -20 :( backup plan is to call a family member if i can't make it, but idk if i can trust them...
This is not a good time in history to have chickens that don't live in your own yard :(

For my part in preperation I have re-mounded the snow banks around the bottom of the camper coop, going further up this time. It is warmer already , and it will take a lot of wind chill out of the equation. We have been getting snow and the bottom layer was sticking kind so my hope is that it freezes tonight firm and don't get blowed away. Even the rabbit hutch coop got a big bank mounded up around it, especially the area that was only protected by tarps. 3 foot high, 3 foot deep! No electric at the coop, i wish i had it there so i could drop a heat loop into the water :( But i did be able to get a big bag of corn and i have topped off both crumble dishes and dishes of corn so they can eat as much as possible to get their little bodies warm. I have the duramycin in the water too. Between the two days of it their combs are already redder and my diarrhea hen looks like she is doing better. Before she had terrible icicles on her bum fuzz. Grody!

Stay safe everyone, if you don't have them already some leather/ pleather gloves with the fuzzy insides are a good idea; watch your fingers with the water! For you folks that aren't already it is a good idea to take the whole water dish inside during the night and set it in the tub to thaw. That will keep you from having to get your fingers wet out there--- So worried right now about people and animals alike.

Becareful. Just got home from a short trek out and its scary awful. I've driven in michigan winters for 24 yrs and this is the one time I wanted to turn around and go home. Going to put ducks, geese and outdoor cats in garage for the next few days. Thankfully cats have a healthy respect for them. For all who have to go out be careful please.

Wow, your weather sounds absolutely horrible! I don't know how you manage. We are down to 11 with -2 tonight with the wind chill. That sounds warm considering whats happening your way. I've been sewing coats for the goats all day but I'm having trouble keeping them from "rolling", even with a girth around their withers. Nothing like a goat with an upside down coat on. Any thoughts?

Fuzzy, you don't know how much I've learned from all your posts. I've always loved you guys on this thread. It's so down to earth and I hope everyone gets back on soon. You've just got to blow off people who rain on other's parades. I've always thought such people don't have enough to do so they've got to worry about other people instead - lol. Kind of sad. Personally, I don't have time or patience for individuals like that.

It was so cold this morning that the girls took a few steps out of the coop when I opened the pop door, felt the cold and then turned and ran right back in

. I keep a radiator heater going in there so do use heat but also have a backup solar generator. In fact, some yahoo hunting ducks at the lake yesterday shot out the transformer that powers the four farms on the road to our neighborhood. I previously set up a solar generator that charges a marine battery so just plugged into that and got power. Easy peasy. It wouldn't last all day but works until I can get the big generator up and running.

I like your idea about putting hay bales on the outside of the coop for more insulation. I may do that around the outside base of the goat barn to keep drafts out.
