Hi Savannah. First time we got chicks was 2yrs ago and on a whim. We had discussed getting them beforehand, but not prepared for them at all. We went into our local tsc and they had discounted their week-olds so we jumped and this was in the middle of February in Michigan. We raised them in a super huge cardboard box in our basement until DH made me a proper brooder. They stayed in that until he made our coop. Of our original 20, we only lost 1. We ended up getting more that year and ended up with 39. Since, we've added more, hatched a couple and took on a few from others who could no longer keep them. We currently have 51 chickens from all we had, but we only ever lost the one to sickness. The others we lost were to various predators. As for the coop, it's huge. I not sure of the dimensions, but it's about 1 1/2 feet off the ground. It's completely surrounded by hardware cloth and we padlock the door at night. We don't have a ramp for them, but they have no problem just jumping up. We use straw for bedding. But thinking of getting a few pullets for now then when it starts to warm up trying baby chicks. I'm new so don't wanna get in over my head and be disappointed if my chicks was to not make it! I'd feel like a bad chicken mother! Lol
Gigi, I hope your doc is right because nerve damage is no fun. Trust me.
