Fuzzy's Farm

Morning Gigi ! Hows the weather down there? Tuesday we set a record of 64, now only 19 and snowing. I wish Mother Nature would make up her mind! At least I'm not out sinking in the mud.

Morning, Rusty

Wow, that's a big jump. It's bright and sunny today and going to hit 54. Wish I could stay home but have to go put in time at work. The tornados missed us day before yesterday but I think the south east (miss, ala, etc) got hit pretty hard. I'm not looking forward to ducking tornados the next few months.

Yuck, 19! Too cold. I can handle snow but I hate really low temps.

How's your DH and his driving?

DH is in Chicago area had a break down last night. Has to go to Salt LAKE City with you may as well say an empty trailer. Looked at wind speeds and directions across I-80. It will be a fight with the steering well most of trip for him. And cold! Parts of Iowa has wind chill alerts of 25 - 30 below. That is too cold for me,I'll definitely think of him as the fireplace is going!

Morning Robin ! Another one ! Sure I'm game. But I can see you are going to be a enabler!
Morning Rusty. Enabler ? Who me ? Never hahahahaha.. will be fun. It's like the one we went to in Birch Run.
That's the way I feel when I sit in the goat pen. The chickens are just across from them and so I can watch them both. All the petty stuff that goes on at work just melts away as I laugh at the babies' antics.

Why are you getting rid of your sheep, Robin?

That's sad Mom2. Yeah, holding off for awhile might be the best answer.
I am selling my sheep because it is time. Trying to cut way back. Not going to go into next winter with everything I have. I also am going to cut waaay back on my chickens. I have a trio of blue copper marans that in awhile will be going to a young man named Jace. Just getting old enough now and tired enough now. Need to cut back and maybe start enjoying some life.

So I'm reading "The small scale poultry flock". It's really good although I don't agree with all of it. He has a good section on run management for those of us who can't free range the girls and suggests that a run should be covered in deep litter - primarily hay or straw and that as this matures, worms and grubs, etc will develop underneath it and supply protein to the flock. The deep litter also helps turn droppings into useable compost instead on eventually building up enough that the chemical imbalance hurts the soil. Also deep litter helps seeds sprout (from the hay, etc. and also if you broadcast birdseed over it) which supplies greens.

What do you guys think? I'm seriously considering this as it would give the girls something to do as well as provide worms...

That sounds horrible! I'm with you on the fireplace.

That's a good reason!!! Your winters sound so bad I would hate dealing with stuff like water freezing all the time.
