Gigi so sorry about your father, I lost my dad in 2000. So I know your pain. God bless you. My mama bantams took all 11 chicks out today, was little worried but they did fine all back inside snuggled up for the night. Ended up with 9 bantam chicks 1 leghorn, and 1 kooka maran. 2 big chicks look funny in there with tiny bantams. Took pictures today, maybe you can post for me Nova? If so I'll email them to you. The picture of you and your son is very cute! Enjoy him children are so precious! Have great evening everyone!!!

I need help with the goat. We got the goat back, and from looking at the bag of bones that he is it is clear that the "friend" was lying, and the other 2 did not die of animal attacks. DH has looked the bodies over, and he went down the day after the first one happened and there were no tracks in the snow.

Hooves are overgrown and he is walking like he's foundering; DH knows how to trim and even I could hold him at this point.

Too weak to worm. For the last few weeks (or more for all we know) he's been getting raked up dead leaves and sticks to eat. Every knob on his bones are jutting out. Hair is dull, eyes sunk in. It was evening when DH carried him home, so tomorrow i wil look under his eyes to see if he's anemic. DH is furious, he has been asking about the goat every other week and has offered more than once to buy feed if they needed $$.

Any suggestions for the best thing to start with? I had to give him a bucket of scratch, it was all i had and the feed store was already closed. I hope he don't die of bloat now, but if he did at least the poor thing would die happy in his home with a full tummy.

Oh the poor baby. First thing I would do is get him Probios from the feed store or just some yogurt (even with sugar because he obviously needs it). Don't feed him too much too fast, oats are okay in moderation (a handful at a time) or even make a warm mash but you really need some goat feed. I'd worm him with Safeguard which is pretty mild - he's probably filled up with worms. Use ACV in his water - I put about a glug per gallon. Also put free choice baking soda and goat minerals out. As far as hooves go, clean out all the old decayed stuff (scrape until you see the white of the frog). But don't stress him too much or he'll go down. Cleaning is probably more important at this point than trimming. Is the tip of his tail bare? If so he needs copper but that's on down the road. I'm so hoping he makes it. Those people ought to be starved.

mutts on another thread helped me out a bit, she said i have to do tiny amounts of good hay. Only a flake a day, broken into short feeding sessions. A handful of pellets is all he can have either.

Every instinct says to feed, but this apparently is dangerous. She brought up the concentration camps, apparently the first survivors were fed immediately and died because it was too much on the body after it started shutting down already; It's funny she brought that up because that was my first thought - concentration camp. I always wondered what happened to the survivors.

That's so true. I was just going to get back on here and tell you that. No alfalfa (or maybe just a handful) but timothy is a really good, easily digestible hay. I would still do the yogurt/probios - just a little, as it helps the bacteria in the rumen. Probios is my go to stuff whenever anyone is sick. I so love our goats that it's painful hearing about someone treating them like this.

Mutts and gigi are giving you good advice for the poor goat. I can see their point of giving little amounts of food right now because like with a human the less you eat, the smaller your stomach gets. You could easily overfeed an animal if you aren't careful. Oh, and try not to give any scratch if there is corn in it. DH said it's bad for goats. I actually held out some mixed seeds that had corn in it for my goats one time and he had a fit about it. Hope he recovers for you.
