My black Ameraucana cockerel Scout was limping this afternoon and I knew he didn't have bumblefoot since we just got finished checking everyone's feet yesterday. When I picked him up, I saw that a toenail had been broken about a 1/4" from the tip and was still attached but cocked over to the side. We clipped the piece off, but naturally, it wouldnt stop bleeding. Why, oh why, do I have to always stop bleeding on combs and toenails??? Anyway, blood stop powder was useless and then DH had an idea. He took a glue stick and melted the end with his blow torch really well, then he put a glob of hot glue on the end of the toe and we blew it to cool it faster. Voila! Worked like a charm. Scout was an angel the entire time-he is such a sweetie and this was the very first time we'd had to ever administer first aid to him. Just thought I'd offer this for anyone who has to deal with it. I hate the way those dang nails bleed!

I'd never heard that about pepper. When Hawkeye got his comb gouged by a hen upon taking his position in the flock, nothing would stop it. Flour, sugar, Blood stop, styptic, pressure-it was awful. I wouldnt try the hotglue on a comb, though... OUCH! Wouldn't want to add third degree burns to the already smarting comb!
