Annalise nickered, and lifted her tail invitingly.
Dour stopped in his tracks, his ears forward in surprise. He'd never tried actual courtship until just now, and he found he liked how quickly it got responses. Okay, courtship isn't a waste of time, he thought to himself as he approached Annalise. He didn't hesitate, and neither did he hurry. Calmly, he mounted her.

Titan had trotted a ways away from his mares, and saw the faint figure of Dusky in the moonlight.
Dusky, typical of a prey animal, felt eyes watching her and woke with a start. The rotund mare flailed about helplessly until she managed to roll to her stomach. Her eyes found Titan, and she mumbled sleepily, "I didn't leave."

Annalise nickered, and nuzzled him when he was finished. Gesturing farther into the woods and away from the herd, she trotted away and craned her neck back to the stud, whinnying invitingly.

"I know," he mumured softly. He trotted up beside her, and lay down next to the mare.

Dour took an anxious look at the herd and whinnied. He feared an attack on it in his absence. Last time he'd left his herd alone without its lead mare, Dusky at the time, it had scattered. He looked at Annalise and gave another concerned whinny.

Dusky rolled back onto her side almost immediately when Titan laid down next to her. Though this was her third foal, she still felt racked with anxiety.

Hidden away in her thicket, Ash had given birth to a grullo colt. The mare nudged the foal, licking its face. Lifting her head, she whinnied loudly, spreading the news.

Annalise obviously had no care for the well-being of her herd. She trotted farther into woods, craning her neck, tossing her head (sending her forelock askew), and whinnying.

Titan's ears perked. Nickering to Dusky, he whispered, "I'm sorry, but I've got to go tend to Ash. Later, we can do this again..."

Dour looked nervously from Annalise, disappearing into the woods, and his herd. Finally, he whinnied to Aurora. "Watch the herd, Aurora!" The grullo stud hurried after his favorite, and lead, mare.

"That would be nice," Dusky said, her voice still a sleepy mumble. The blue roan had finally accepted that Titan had to tend all his mares. He seemed to always find time for her, and she was happy with it.

Ash emerged from the thicket with the unsteady newborn at her heels. It seemed she'd gotten rid of Cinders just in time to have another foal.
