5 gallon buckets are to small and slippery. Box nests are best of at least 12 x 12. Hot wire around perimeter property keeps dogs and terrestrial predators out. Eliminate stress upon the flock by any means necessary. I've never used galvanized nest boxes, only wood.
I wanted to use wooden boxes but they cost too much for me to pay for them and my carpentry skills are a 3 on a 1-10 scale. I saw someone else using 5 gallon buckets and decided to try it. I threw in a few handfuls of wood shavings and a piece of wood in front to keep the eggs in and it's been working ever since.
