I got three 9 month old game hens on Monday and noticed one of them had spurs. Is that common? The other 2 hens just have tiny bumps in their legs where spurs would be.

Hi! Yes, you can trim them. I have a Lakenvelder hen that grows crazy-sharp spurs. I have to keep them trimmed or she cuts herself.

I twist my hens spurs off, it will leave a bloody stump though, but it heals up. I just get a grip of the legs and grab the spurs with my fingers and twist them back and forth. Gently at first, and gradually increase pressure until they break loose. They have to be big enough to get hold of though. The other option is to just clip off the sharp end but be careful not to get the quick.

To answer your first question, Yes most game hens have spurs...The good ones anyways. These girls usually make the best mothers and are armed for the job. Rumors also say that they throw the best chicks as well. I have about 15 game hens and all have spurs or are growing them. Also, I would Never twist or cut spurs off of a hen. This is used for the main purpose of defending their chicks from predators. A cock is a different story. Also when twisting off spurs there is a certain "method" you should use for the "spur" is actually an outside bone.

I have a standard Silver duckwing old english game hen named Tinkerbell, and she has really big spurs! And she will use them on me, too!

I think it's normal!
