Gamers United!

I have heard that Tales of Symphonia is good. I think it may have some music game-esque parts to it, which might be interesting.

As far as Ratchet and Clank games, if you've never played any of them before, you need to start with "Tools of Destruction" (for PS3) at the very least. Yes, there's a sort of intro to "Crack in Time" that recaps the storyline in the previous two games ("Tools of Destruction" and "Quest for Booty"), but I really think you'll miss out if you don't play the first one. The storyline for the Ratchet and Clank games is so good that you feel like you're playing an awesome movie. You won't know the characters or get the jokes as well unless you've played the previous games. (It's would be sort of like reading a series of ten books starting at the tenth book...you'd miss a LOT!).

Really, I'd want to make you start all the way back with the first Ratchet and Clank game for PS2 and play all of the PS2 games first (with the PSP ones being optional).

Kay-o. Thanks! I sorta want to get ToS for Christmas.

And OMG, there's going to be a Professor Layton movie!!!! Fangirl-ism meter is going through the roof!!!!!!!!

OOh, a Professor Layton movie would be really sweet.

You should look for videos of ToS on YouTube; maybe you can get an idea of the gameplay that way and decide if it's for you. If you have a Play'n'Trade video game store near you, they let you try out games on their in-store consoles before you decide to buy the game. You could do that, too.

I'm almost finished with my [first] playthrough of "A Crack in Time." I'm about 14 hours in, I think. I don't do speed runs...

There are a few differences between how weapons upgrades, etc., in this game work as compared to "Tools of Destruction." Not every weapon can be upgraded, I don't think...unless something will change toward the end of the game. (I'm on my third playthrough of "Tools of Destruction," though, so I can't really remember what the limits were on weapons in that game the first time through).

One thing I like about "A Crack in Time" is that there is NO racing. That stuff always annoyed me in previous games because I am terrible at any racing-type thing. Instead, Ratchet has "hoverboots" in this game, which weren't hard for me to get the hang of, and you can actually use them throughout the game, not just on some speed course thing. They're actually useful. The developers of the Sonic games could take a cue from Insomniac on how to blend speed with a 3-D action platformer. (The new Sonic games always annoy me...and I was a HUGE Sonic fan "back in the day").

Probably 50% of the enemies in this game were used in "Tools of Destruction." I'm not sure if that's because the game takes place in a similar area of the universe or what. It made some of the beginning levels pretty easy because I already knew which tactics/weapons would work best. There are some levels later on, though, where the fights against enemies end up seeming just as insane as a super-hard arena battle, so it's definitely not simple to get through everything. You do have to spend some time leveling up the weapons before you can beat certain bosses and areas.

I LOVE the Clank puzzles in this game. There are even a couple of puzzle-esque things for Ratchet to solve. Clank is way stronger in this game and he even gets a weapon. He's more independent now...but I won't say too much because I don't want to give away any spoilers.

As far as graphics...this game is just beautiful. The details are astounding. They've really set the bar high for any future "Ratchet" games.

I'll probably beat the game either tomorrow or early next week. I won't be able to play much tonight because of Hallowe'en. We're having friends over and I know the game room will be devoted to hours of Rock Band and DDR.
