I really need to invest in one of those

A very inexpensive brooder plate is the Christmas rope light. 18' for $10. Wind around a cardboard box with about an inch of dirt on top chicks love it. The picture has the rope under the box as well. Last time I only put it on the coop bottom and chicks laid on top of it. It does take the rope awhile to get the dirt warm but it had the dirt at 90* in a few hours. It's 60* in the barn.
This same light does really well for a seed starter also

Temp on rope is 108*.

It certainly can be made to be better looking. But it works extremely well.
